Journey XIV Week 10
A Season of Miracles

A springtime tree at Lady Bird Lake.

A springtime tree at Lady Bird Lake. From the distance it’s just a budding tree, but up close the flowers are filled with spectacular, tiny and intricate signs of life which are nothing short of a miracle.

“Spring is nature’s way of saying, ‘Let’s party!’” — Robin Williams

Action: Embrace the miracle of spring and find areas of your life that need re-growth, rebirth, and renewal. Take the dedicated extra steps to move, use and love your body and life while believing in your ability to flourish and fly.

I don’t know about you, but over the weekend I’ve abused my television. From yelling at it, turning up the volume extra loud, to not even turning it off, my television has worked overtime. What I am confessing is that I’m a NCAA basketball tournament junkie and if I had a bracket, it would officially be busted which is just the way I like it.

I enjoy the game of basketball. I was raised by a basketball coach, played basketball through High School and am now married to a basketball coach. You could say that basketball is part of my DNA, but that’s not why I love March Madness. The reason I love “the dance” is because it’s the most pure and perfect example of what can happen when passion, commitment, team work, belief and hard work come together.

Getting to play in the NCAA tournament is every eighteen to twenty-two year old college basketball player’s dream. Unfortunately, out of the 64 teams that are selected to play, only one will leave victorious. However, the tournament has not failed us and miracles continue to occur as David continues to beat Goliath. For example, #13 seed Murray St. defeated #4 seed Vanderbilt; #9 seed Northern Iowa defeated #1 seed Kansas; #10 seed St. Mary’s beat #2 seed Villanova; and #14 seed Ohio University beat #3 seed Georgetown. Watch highlights from CBS Sports…

The spirited, determined and proud student athletes inspire me to believe that anything is possible. They remind me that odds, rankings and opinions mean nothing. What matters most is that the players believe they can win. If the Northern Iowa basketball team and coaching staff would’ve believed as 99% of the population did, then a victory over Kansas would’ve been impossible. But they, along with their moms, dads and a few loyal fans believed they could win—and they did!

Another reminder of miracles is the season of spring, which is thankfully upon us! Less than one month ago everything appeared dead and we even experienced a “snow storm”. Now trees are showing signs of re-growth, bluebonnets and wildflowers are experiencing rebirth, and the warmth from the sun is breathing renewed and fresh air into our bodies.

Springtime also reminds me of the miracle of the human body. I marvel at the incomprehensible and intricate body and how the Circulatory System, Immune System, Skeletal System, Excretory System, Muscular System, Endocrine System, Digestive System, Nervous System and Respiratory System work… and work together. Having a healthy body is a blessing. We need to move it, use it, love it and like it.

Mother Nature is showing us that the dormant season has officially ended and she’s calling us to spring into action, flourish and fly! In the spirit of spring I encourage you to find areas of your life that need re-growth, rebirth, and renewal. Take the dedicated and extra steps and believe in your ability to shoot the winning shot and beat Goliath. As this week’s video shows, you never know when only going one more inch will get you where you want to go.
